Cabin Fever Thoughts

New England winters are not for the faint of heart. Some years I find myself rethinking if it’s worth remaining here.

The same “Nor’easters” that create photographic scenes also bring blizzards, power outages, dangerous travel, and frigid temperatures. Surviving the season requires money, preparation, patience, and a good sense of humor, especially when digging out from yet another snowfall.

Still, there’s something special about winter here. It’s the scent of woodsmoke drifting from a chimney, the warmth of the kitchen and making hot chocolate, the thrill of watching the children race downhill in the snow on sleds, or the simple comfort of a good book in my heated armchair. The one constant that carries me through a winter day is seeing the garden birds at the feeders outside the window.

New Englanders know that winter is a test of endurance, but also a time of reflection and beauty. And when spring finally arrives, living here in the northeast feels all that much sweeter. I guess I’m feeling reflective today, maybe it’s my age.
