Women Who Wear Long Hair After Age 60, Nobody Will Care

What age is too old for long hair? It’s a widely debated topic I’m learning. My entire life I have had my hair no longer than my shoulders since age 7. As a child I had beautiful long hair but I also had a young mother who decided to use her beauty school lessons on me. It was the early 1970’s and a time when the pixie haircut was all the rage so that’s what I ended up with, much to my despair. As a mother and young wife I just never had time to do my hair so I kept it short and easy. Now that I’m older I have been letting it grow.

The odd thing about my aging is until my late 40’s my hair was always a straight texture and dark blonde. After menopause my hair color turned to dark brown and is now a head of long ringlet curls, it’s the weirdest thing ever. Sounds pretty simple right?, it’s not. My face easily shows my advancing age and I don’t want my hair to make it look worse than it is already. I guess for now I’ll just keep it up in a messy bun and ponder it more. The truth of the matter is in my experience people don't really care so why should I?

Have you ever heard of a vitamin B12 crash? For whatever reason my body doesn’t hold onto B12 and it happens to me about once a year. When my symptoms of low B12  begin to show I’m already at the point of needing the supplement injections. Last week it began with the muscle aches, brain fog, the bruising, and the familiar electric shooting pains in my fingers and toes.

At that point I still didn’t have a clue until one morning I woke up beyond normal exhaustion (I am never exhausted) and then it clicked. I do not recommend trying to dose yourself with extra B12 unless you get blood work done first. I have a doctor appointment in May and don’t need the added expense of going more than once so I upped my diet intake with enriched food and yes, a B12 vitamin supplement until then. I feel a lot better now but I’m still not there yet.

In my 4 year quest to find suitable slacks that are both comfy and allow me to move working in the warehouse I finally found these yoga pants on Amazon. On a whim last year I got a pair of the high waist straight leg style, then found the flare bottoms they make are much more comfortable. It gets warm at work in summer and the flare legs allow some breathability along with accommodating my annoying thicker abdomen. The amount of body changes I’ve gone through from age 45 to age 62 is a mind bender. I miss being able to wake up, get dressed, and just charge out into the world without a clue.

Working is my biggest physical head spinner. I’m at the stage in life where my mind is still young but my body says “this is a real bad idea.” Do we ever accept we can’t physically do what we used to? I’m not there yet so if I need to lift 50 pounds at work I just do, but with consequences. It’s difficult to stop and tell myself “nope I can’t do it.”  I have always been a person that never had to ask for help, I just do what needs doing. Now as a stubborn old broad I need to have a new meeting of my mind and body so both are on the same page.

Days ago we decided to take stock of our canned goods along with checking their expire dates. I’ve said it before, when COVID and the food shortages happened years ago we began keeping reserves of dry and canned foods. It’s become a habit since that time and about once every few months we rotate through it and use what’s dated. Somewhere along our travels we picked up an odd brand of southern style canned green beans with diced potatoes and neither of us had a clue from where or what it was.

Although I’m not a fan of canned anything, it needed using up. It didn’t look like much in the pan, not to mention I always rinse canned vegetables after opening them but these you couldn’t. I don’t know where the Hanover brand comes from but the turmeric and bacon flavored sauce the beans and potatoes were in was actually pretty good. I'm sure the sodium content was off the charts but why not. If anyone has heard of these or had them I’d be interested to hear.

Pollen and allergy season go hand in hand, and ours has just begun to blossom. The fact we reside in an old dusty ill kept building doesn’t help. Up until today we had a smaller air cleaner in our living room which usually suffices. I noticed my husband sneezing and dry coughing recently so decided it was time to try and nip it in the bud. We upgraded to a larger air filtration system.

No it’s not the top of the line but it’s certainly working well for our space. Today he has coughed very little and no sneezing. Last year the pollen outdoors was so thick by May you could draw faces in the powder on the cars and we had to change our air cabin filters in the vehicles. Like most things the pollen reactions are new too, to my husband anyways.

Last week we had wonderful 60f temps and it was a blessing. It nearly made us think winter was finally done. We were wrong. One last snowstorm hit the region, luckily the majority of what we got here was ice and the snow stayed north and west. If I had to choose I would take the snow. We have something called “fools spring” that happens in March and we were the fools to forget about it. The last slap of winter however has not stopped the spring bulbs and flowers from popping out.

I pulled my bird feeders and would like nothing better than to put them up but am waiting out whatever illness is plaguing some of the finches we have seen. My “yard family” always brings a smile to my face and I don’t want to contribute to spreading illness to any. Whatever is going around, the Grackles seem unaffected by it. They are still showing up in large noisy flocks. Another good reason to remove the outdoor feeders.

We have one more week to go at work and then some time off. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can get outdoors to sort out more gardening and take in some local nature walks. Although summer is a pretty time of year to hike, early spring is a whole lot less buggy and easier to navigate on foot. You can see where you're going and not spend the whole time waving your arms fending off black flies and mosquitos.

Next on my list is to stop by our local ice cream stand that’s just officially opened for the season. There’s no better way to give winter a kick in the backside good-bye and say hello to the warmer weather. My favorite ice cream is butter crunch, what’s yours?
