Easter Sunday Then And Now
To all who celebrate, a Happy Easter. As a child growing up in a Catholic family Easter was a more prominent holiday filled with the tradition of Sunday church, dinner with extended family, and Easter egg hunting. I carried on those same traditions with my own children when they were young but omitted the Catholic part. Now in my latter years Easter is low-key, with just my husband, myself, and one of my adult children. My husband always insists on cooking our holiday dinners and I usually do the cleaning up which I don’t mind. The menu this year for the day is a small turkey breast, roasted vegetables, a quiet day.
Yesterday we did a last minute day before the holiday food shopping on a whim. Most people would avoid it due to crowds, but we made it fun. The very fact we can afford to buy anything is a blessing, we come from humble beginnings and even did a stint of living in a car during the Obama recession. Life is not easy, we have, and continue to work our butts off to be where we are today. We both are employed, have a roof over our heads, have clothes to wear, and can afford to eat. Today I am thankful for what we have accomplished, but mindful that in a second the other shoe could drop.
Here in stores we have traditional Easter offerings of decorated cakes and where my husband originated large chocolate eggs that come with goodies stashed inside are “a thing.” I’d never heard of such until he showed me in a local British food shop. What I can tell you is after I sampled British and European chocolate the American made brands we have here taste like cheap flavored wax. I was surprised at the big difference.
It always is amusing to see photos of the way locals celebrate Easter. We all create our own version of fun on special occasions don’t we? When we had our little dog years ago I used to dress her up on holidays I don’t know why, at the time she was my empty nest baby I guess. If she were still here I don’t think I’d do it over as she wasn’t fond of it. I do get a giggle out of seeing others do it. People here dress up any pet animal with mixed results.
I have to say I never considered a goat a pet, it must be the city girl in me. I am surprised to learn goats are actually pretty loyal like dogs and intelligent, this cute little one didn’t mind his (or her) Easter bunny ears one bit.
This one perplexed us, is the mini horse in a full-on bunny suit and ears? How the heck did they get that on him? Hard to imagine but so cute. At least it kept the bugs off and from biting I hope. Mosquito and black fly season is now underway, and they don’t care what warm blooded species you are. More often than not we see swarms around the livestock and horses.
That concludes my little spur of the moment holiday post. It’s late now and the festivities are long over. Dinner was a success, dishes washed, and leftovers put away for another day. The next task at hand is to get outside and begin cleaning out a new spot for a small last minute garden. I hope this blog post finds anyone who stumbles upon it happy, healthy, and enjoying your day.
